A magazine on youth performing arts
Miles Memorial covers a field most newsrooms ignore — community youth playhouses, conservatory training, school theatre, and the buildings that house all of it.
Miles Memorial is independent. We are not affiliated with the Miles Memorial Playhouse in Santa Monica or with the City of Santa Monica, which owns and operates the building. The URL is a nod to a building that anchored the West Coast youth-theatre world for almost a century. The magazine is a separate thing.
What we cover
Five sections. News covers the field — funding, regulation, the national cycle. Programs looks at conservatories, summer intensives, and what training models actually produce young actors who stay with the work. Performers is profiles of young actors, teachers, and directors. Schools covers public, private, and school-district theatre — including the post-cuts revival happening in three districts running unified-arts models. Spaces attends to the buildings — renovation, acoustics, the operational reality of running a stage.
Editorial standards
We name sources where possible. We disclose financial relationships. We don't recycle press releases. We listen to a production before we write about it. When we're wrong, we run a correction at the top of the article and date it.
